I am just dipping my toes in unix and wonder if it would be possible to explore/play with darwin on an old PII. Can I extract the unix pkg from the OSX CD and burn readable disk for the PII? Install on a partitioned hard drive and learn on an expendable system?

Or is this way too complex for a good return on time invested?
Thanks, Yardcat

No, that's a PPC binary and won't do you much good. Go to the Darwin site (http://www.opensource.apple.com/projects/darwin/1.4/release.html) and get the x86 1.4.1 image. Be sure to read the release notes, and don't expect a lot of driver support, beyond the basics.

Thanks, you are right. It won't do much good in OS X form. Is FreeBSD very similar to Darwin? or x86?

Another question; On the OS X Install disk there is Optional Install/BSD Subsystem. Is this useful for?

Thanks for your answers. Seems like you read and reread to make incremental progress. Yardcat
