Color matched printing

I hope there are some out there who can help:

I'm looking for a good reference for matching my LCD with my printer's output. Specifically, I have an Epson R800, and I'm looking to find a way to get the WYSIWYG from the monitor to the final print.

Are there any GOOD books out there that unravel the tangle of color profiles and calibrating devices without(!) having to purchase expensive electronic gear?

If you want more detail I'll gladly provide it!

The bible, as far as many are concerned, is Real World Color Management (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0201773406/). Nobody knows more than this about those guys. But the whole book might be overkill. So...
