Hello,

I recently moved my iTunes folder from my internal hard drive to and external firewire drive.

My playlists and all the tag info is there and most of the songs play fine. However many get the "!" then it say iTunes cant find the song, do you want to find it manually.

The thing is... I can always find the file... it's in the music folder where it should be.

Whats happening here?

Is there a few iTunes can simply scan for missing songs? I hate searching one by one because I have a large collection.

Maybe I moved the whole thing wrong somehow?
What is the proper way to do this?

Thank you very much for any help!

Wierd, iTunes should find them all. Have you tried resetting the music folder location and then changing it back to the external? This should force iTunes to scan the folder again.

Try this. I've had this problem where a restart would fix it but not always...

Just delete everything in your iTunes library window. Then drag the new music folder onto the iTunes window. iTunes will reindex the music and you'll be fine.

I have run into problems with iTunes not finding songs and this is what I've done to solve them.

A. Double-check the location of the music folder in Advanced preferences. A couple times it seemed to want to connect to Music:iTunes:iTunes music when my actual path was Music:iTunes.

B. As mentioned earlier, drag the music folder on top of the iTunes icon to make it re-read the folder.

C. Make sure you copied the iTunes Library files as well. When I don't do that, my Purchased Music folder is missing songs.

Many headaches also seem to be avoided by using consistent organization, i.e., turn on "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and marking compilations as compilations.
