Well, Sometimes it happens once every few days and sometimes it happens several times a day but the entire screen shades, with the boxed message in the middle telling me that OSX needs to restart.

The mc is a 17 inch 1.5Ghz Powerbook with 1.5Gb of DDR RAM.

I have started Console but don't know how/if I can call up what happened before the crash/restart.

Help......glug....glug....

What your experiencing is called a kernel panic.
What you can do for ther Conosle, which is the right place to look at is, once you restart after the crash, look at the system log and post back here what happened maybe in the last minute before the crash happened... Lots of good people here will help look thorugh it and try to find the cause of those crashes.

There should be a panic.log file in the folder /Library/Logs (i.e. under the top level Library folder - not the one in your home folder)
Attach this file too your reply by using the "Manage Attachments" button at the bottom when you reply.

You should try the standard troubleshooting suggestions:

Have you done a permissions repair lately?

Also, you could be having RAM issues... try running memtest, you can d/l it HERE (http://www.memtestosx.org/)

Well, here is the panic.log

Problem. the uploader syas that .log is not supported???

The console readout is very long indeed - how can I get that to you?
Thanks
Gavin

You can actually do a copy and paste as usual in the log window on your machine... So select the part of the log, copy it and then paste in in your post reply window... Its the easiest way to do it !

You can copy the text of the log file and then paste it into a TextEdit (or other plain text editor) and save it as plain text - with a suffix ".txt". Then you will be able to attach it.
Please attach the full panic.log in this way.
But for the system.log or console.log, please just select the relevant part of the log - e.g. the part from the last restart (look at the times shown on each message) until the time of the crash.

If the logs are more than a hundred lines or so, it is preferable to attach them as files instead of just doing copy & paste.

Rob Griffiths (the site owner) has now enabled upload of ".log" files

I don't see any indication of a problem in that console log.
But I do note that you have "Little Snitch" installed.
I'm not sure, but I think Little Snitch uses a kernel extension.
Such things are possible sources of kernel panics and so it is recommended that you uninstall all 3rd-party kernel extensions while troubleshooting.
I think you will find that this is one of the recommendations of the standard troubleshooting steps referred to above.

Well, I deleted Little Snitch and have had a so far hassle free experience..

I will report again in a few days.
Thanks
Gavin

I use Little snitch on 10.3.7 and have never had a problem. I would suggest something else may be wrong. Why not contact www.obdev.at and ask for help finding what it is.....

Well, a week later and by coincidence or otherwise, she is as quiet as a church mouse since I deleted that Little Snitch. No crashes, no hangs and no need to restart. Luvvit!

Don't shoot the messenger.....
:-)
Thanks again,
Gavin

I had problems with kernel panics while disconnecting from the internet after updating to 10.3.7. I've seen on the Apple Forums other people having kernel panics after updating to 10.3.7.
