Every so often...and every time I reboot...the desktop icon for my OSX hard drive moves to a different location on the desktop by itself...specifically, about the width of the disk icon to the left. I usually keep it at the top right corner of the desktop...it is the first icon in a line of icons along the right side. There is plenty of room for the icon, and no other icons move on their own. Does anyone know why my disk icon roams?

Where is your dock?
this can make icons on the desktop move

My dock is at the bottom of the screen. There is an icon that is at least ten pixels above the top of dock, but it's never moved. Interesting possibility, though...maybe i'll remove an icon to see what happens.

i some time had probs with it being on the left of my screen (where the stuff on my desktop is) and it would sometimes move the icons when it looked like there was space for them

I was having similar behavior. I have two drive icons, and I always tried to position the second icon underneath the first, at the top right of the screen. But it would always move down.
What I did to fix it was to go to the View menu in the Finder, Show View Options, click Snap to Grid, move the icon where I wanted it, and then logged out. When I logged in again, it was where I'd left it. Because I don't much like that snap to grid thing, I then tried the Keep Arranged by Name option and logged out. Of course, that shuffled my aliases around. So I unchecked them, and now my icon doesn't move around any more.
I don't know why this worked, but it seems to have fixed it. Anyway, I'm happy.
