I have an original Tangerine iBook that my wife now uses for mostly word processing. She dropped a book on it the other day, and the "7" key poped off. I've had keys pop off before, but this time the key broke. Not on the keyboard, mind you, but just one of the hooks on the plastic shell. In otherwords, the key poped off and can't be put back on. The "7" key still works when typing, it just doesn't have a labeled shell.

I called apple (the iBook is no longer under warrently), they won't even talk to me without charging $50 for a phone conversation. I called the "Mac Genius" at the local Apple Retail store. He said that they had to replace the entire keyboard. Again, too expensive for an out of warrenty repair.

So here's my question: Does anyone have an old iBook that is collecting dust (or has a similar problem with broken keys) who would be willing to sell the "7" key to me?

(In Apple's favor, I was only on hold for a total of about 45 seconds...enough time for the recording to tell me that calls were taken in order that they were received. That's the best time for a call in support line I've ever gotten! Go Apple support!)

Sorry, I'm using my tangerine ibook for myself....

Apple Support can be killer sometimes, lol

I know the feeling.

A key popped off my Ericsson cell phone, and I got the same runaround. I emailed Ericsson directly and within days had a repaired phone with a brand new battery (they'd checked out the phone as well as adding the key). Cost was zero.

I've only had really good success with Apple by mailing (USPS) a registered letter stating facts. You will receive a phone call from someone enabled to be creative. Because you're out of warranty, you might be out of luck; you do have to talk to a techie first. But in your situation, perhaps not. A letter is definately worth a shot.

Failing this, I do have a Blueberry, but I'm finding this new OSX impossible to work with (no ability to index even my home - it runs for about 20 seconds).

Do you know the X well? If you do, my bluebook is still under warranty, so I might be able to barter an exchange of a lost key for some tutoring in plain English. I expect to get the blueberry back next week. What do you think?

Many many heartfelt thanks to Radiant1 who, after many pirvate messages, is helping me with this problem. It's always nice to meet new people who are genuinely nice.
