can anyone solve my problem

I have 4 computers networked together and one acts as a firewall to share the internet connection with the other 3 computers. recently i installed Timbuktu pro in the computers and I wanted to control the other computers using timbuktu but when i type in the IP address in the TCP/IP tab in the New Connection window, I get an error message saying that the computer is not responding. Is there a way to solve my problem?

It appears your firewall is blocking access to the other computers. (That's what firewalls do!!!)

The solution is to gain access 'through' the firewall for specific, defined tasks. This is known as a 'pass through.' Timbuktu requires that you pass through the following ports:
407 UDP
1417...1420 TCP

I have done this with a cable router/firewall. Most devices of this nature have a screen in which you can gain access to these advanced features. Just set the ports to pass and the (local) IP to pass to and you are set. I have not done it with the software firewall in OS X. Some research should disclose how to set up the pass throughs you desire.

BTW, this is how you set up an FTP or HTTP (or other) service behind the firewall. You just have to set the appropriate ports and direct them to the appropriate computers.

You MAY run into a problem that the firewall only wants to allow pass through of any given port to ONE computer behind the firewall. That would limit your Timbuktu access to only one computer. I have not had an opportunity to check this out.

Hope this helps put you on the right track.

If all your computers are networked together, inside the firewall, then the firewall is not blocking the connection. A default installation of Timbuktu has no Incoming Access turned on. Go to the Setup menu, select Incoming Access on all 4 computers and put a checkmark next to TCP/IP. Then you can "Ask for permission" to connect but you may want to create a "Trusted Visitor" under Setup - Visitor Priveledges. Create a New Visitor name and password. On a PC the priveledges of that visitor have to be selected, on a Mac they have all priveledges by default. Enjoy!

But I'm on OS X and when i tryto enable TCP/IP incoming access, it says,

Timbuktu could not enable incoming TCP/IP access. Please check the TCP/IP configuration

:( :(

I tried doing that on classic and it worked but not on OS X

Which version of Timbuktu are you using? When you say it works in Classic do you mean booted into 9?

Why do I get a TCP/IP error message when attempting to enable TCP/IP incoming access?

If you attempt to enable TCP/IP incoming access on one operating system while it is enabled on the other, you might receive the following error message:

Timbuktu Pro could not enable incoming TCP/IP access. Please check the TCP/IP configuration.

After restarting, switch incoming access

o On
o Off (avoids this alert)

Because one operating system is attempting to listen in on UDP port 407, enabling the other Timbuktu Pro will cause this error message since the port is in use. This issue within Timbuktu Pro is directly due to a problem in the classic environment within OS X. The issue is that when a classic application on Mac OS X closes a UDP port, the classic environment doesn't release it for other applications to use. Forcing the classic process to stop, frees up the port.

Note: If you are running OS 10.1 and v6.0, you will also get this error message. This problem has been resolved in Timbuktu Pro v6.0.1.

The workaround is to disable TCP/IP incoming access on the other version of Timbuktu Pro.

I have done what you are trying to do under OS 9. I had to use a little known feature in Timbuktu where you can tell TB2 to listen on a port other than 407. It required running an applescript to change the port setting. I think this works for X as well.

http://www.netopia.com/en-us/support/howtodocs/mac/index.html

The above page has some helpful hints. Here's a quick summary of what I did:

1. Install TB2 on macs behind firewall.
2. Run AppleScript to give TB2 a new TCP/IP port to listen to. Each computer got it's own port, such as 5001, 5002, etc.
3. Assign fixed IP addresses to all macs inside the firewall.
4. Go to the router and redirect the appropriate ports to the appropriate machines.

From outside the firewall I access each machine like this 123.124.125.124:50010
I use the router's external IP address and the ports for each specific Mac inside the firewall.

The port number for each machine is written iin after the colon.

If this seems complicated, well, it is!

I have 4 computers networked together. Firewalled internet.

[bahamutX correct me if wrong] This has nothing to do with passing through a firewall.

Can you connect two other computers? Have you opened all ports on the firewall to the trusted IP range of all your computers?

Right. Well then, how about buying another Timbukty license. That should help :-)
