Deleting songs and playlists manually

I am trying to remove playlists from my iPod, which I thought would be pretty straightforward. With the preferences set for manual, and the iPod mounted in iTunes, I have highlighted the playlist, and hit delete. The playlist then disappears from the iPod, but there is no change in the available memory. Are those songs still hiding somewhere on my device? How do I get rid of them?

A playlist is just a virtual representation of songs that you want to have grouped together. It doesn't actually "contain" the songs.
You have to remove the songs from your iPod library to have them be removed from the iPod.
