Hi,
I'm an experienced Network admin, recently involved in this mixed eviroment. The problems is I got error 8940 when setup the appletalk or TCP/IP printers in the MAC OS 9 with either chooser/laserwriter or Desktop Printer Utility (DPU).

The printers are enable for Apple talk (zone: *) and TCP/IP (static IP and same subnet). The appletalk and tcp/IP are both enabled on OS 9. I can see all the appletalk printers/server using chooser, and create the desktop printer, I also can verify/create the TCP/ip network printer if when use Desktop printer utility to setup a IP Printer. Also those network printers are working fine for other OS 9.

The 8940 error comes when I print from any applications, A similar message also appear when I attempt to Auto Setup the DTP with the Desktop Printer Utility or when using the Finder's Printing menu.

There is a article in apple.com talk about the identicaly problem. I followed all the instructures including:
delete Desktop printer, empty trash, delete the printer description, reinstall the LaserWriter, and rebuild the Desktop files.

BUT the problem is the same. I've been working on this problem for days now, and not making any progress. Can someone please help me to troubleshoot this or point some directions?

1) The printers are a couple of HPs (2200dn) and Ricoh. I got the latest driver from HP website.

2) There is no bridge/router on the intranet. everything is connected to a set of inter-connected switches.

3) OS 9.2.2

4) DPU 1.3

5) LW 8.6

6) Chooser 7.6.2

7) only 1 machine has the problem, others are fine with the same printer.

1 thing strange is when I delete the Postscript Printer Description of those printers, The choose or DPU didn't ask me for the PPD file when I do auto setup. Which makes think there is still something left in there .

I'm not expert on MAC by any meaning, so I might miss some very basic things. Any directions is apprieciated.

Thanks in advance.

Jason

Never Mind, I got it fixed by deleting the preference file , PPD and rebuild the Desktop file again.
