Since there are no OS X versions of the Real Networks players yet, is there any other way of receiving real streams under OS X ???

No Real software yet, but I've heard through a couple of grapevines that it's coming soon.
It works in Classic, and it will also work with IE for X (don't know about the other browsers) if it's selected as your helper application for Real files.

I tried your suggestion of selecting the helper app for Real, on IE 5.1 for X, and it does not identifie RealPlayer to receive the stream, having classic running. Maybe you can explain a little further.

Sure!
1. Open IE Preferences and go to File Helpers.
2. Scroll down to the Real Audio files (.ra, .ram, .rm)
3. Click on one of these, then click the Change button.
4. Under How to Handle, choose "View with application."
5. Click the Browse button and navigate to Real Player/OS 9 and select it.
6. Click OK, then repeat the process for other Real file helpers.
Things do work better if you already have Classic open and Real Player launched. I've had no trouble getting a Real file to play that way. Otherwise, it sometimes hangs.
Let us know if this works.

Thank you for trying to help, but your suggestion, step by step, is what I had already done, and retried with no luck. Even with classic running, I get a mesagge saying, "You do not have the plug-in needed to view the "audio/x-pn-realaudio" type information on this page". Maybe is something else.

Just out of curiousity, do you have "audio/x-pn-realaudio" in the MIME type fields for the three RealPlayer entries? If not, maybe that's what's keeping it from working.
Good luck!

If you get the message "You do not have the plug-in needed to view the "audio/x-pn-realaudio" type information on this page", you probably have selected in the helper application information "View with plug-in" rather than "View with application". Change this to "View with application" and it should solve your problem.

That last suggestion was already done and confirmed. I still get the same message. IE still wants the plug-in to start Realaudio.

I have the same problem what 'Chateauneuf ' has got, too.
I have also done what the above reply said,
but they wouldn't work. :(
Let's make things clear.
'Can you see the 'Big show highlights' in DaveTV on
http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/ in the MAC?'

I can't stand real... but it is still a must-have piece of software.
What I do is simply copy the link (control-click on the link, copy link or location, etc.)....
then I go into Real Crasher and, from the menu, select "open url" or "open location"...
paste the address there. Sometimes it works great. Sometimes you have to delete some stuff in front of the address.... but this gets you where you want to go every time.
I've been able to see all the real audio/video I want this way since X was released. I don't like to mess with the helpers in my browsers because, the prefs always seem to get lost or overwritten or lost... but that's another story.

samadhihi, I tried to get something from the Letterman site, but it didn't work. Apparently some of these sites require a plug-in no matter how one has configured IE's helper applications.
At which point, it seems that if one has to use Classic for RP anyway, might as well use IE Classic as well. That combo does work very well.

I haven't used RealPlayer in quite a while but reading this thread makes me wonder if you have tried getting a stream while booted into OS 9. If not, then you have some problem with that set up that is possibly keeping you from having it work with the above described method.

Because I have no previlage of administrator and
moreover only OS-X is installed in this Mac which I'm using,
there is no choice other than OS-X.
If someone say that I can play the plugin in OS 9 or in classic mode, what makes the difference to saying that it can be played in P.C. or in VPC?
I think I'd better wait until real plugin for X is distributed.
Have a good surfing...

The problem seems to be that Explorer X does not bring along the type/creator codes for the .ram files when they download.
After making the Type = PNRM and the Creator = PNst (I used Super Get Info to do it), double clicking on the downloaded .ram file launched Real Player and then played just fine.
