View Full Version : Cisco console port connection?

Since my TiBook doesn't have a serial port, how do I connect it to a Cisco router's console port for router configuration? What software should I use for terminal emulation? Thanks!

I use telnet. But you may have to rig a serial port connection from some box to enable telnet.
For security, you should limit telnet access to specific IPs in your cisco config file.

I use telnet too. But when you take a new Cisco router out of the box or your network goes down, the Console port is the only way to get in.

i don't know of a reasonable solution to get a serial port on a newWorld mac. so, if your cisco box no habla tcp/ip config, you'll have to have some 'terminal' way to get a serial connection to that port on the cisco box. either a dumb VT terminal, or borrow someone's PeeCee laptop and telnet in.

Oh well. I have a PC laptop I cna use, I was just hoping to never need to rely on it since I have the TiBook as well. Isn't there a USB -> Serial interface out there somewhere?

there are several usb->serial devices on the market. keyspan has one and recently upgraded their drivers.
for software, ZTerm is hands down the best in the mac world.
i just wish there was some way to utilize the internal modem instead of needing an external adapter. having a serial port is one thing my 520c has over my titanium ;)
netadmins still need serial. as mentioned before, network devices can't talk ip out of the box, they need to be configured first. the issue isn't pc vs. mac. it's an issue of telling the network device what protocols is will use and then configuring those protocols. heck, some network devices don't use ip, so you can't telnet into them, ever. (even from a pc)
hope this helps,

zterm! with the oh-so-cool "recoverable" zmodem protocol. Now that is a blast from the past. For some reason, it makes me think of Airborne and Dark Castle and Real Sound by eric zolker!
Is zterm still actively updated?

Airborne! ah, many a bleary-eyed night-on-call playing in the dark waiting for a 300 baud acoustic modem file transfer to finish.
