Hello all ... I have a problem with Virtual PC 5.0 and I hope someone can help.

Here is my situation. I installed VPC with Windows 2000 and it looks and runs great. However, I created a new disk and installed RedHat Linux 7.0 and it doesn't look so good. It looks like it is stuck at 800x600 (or worse) and I can't get it looking any better. I checked out the stats of that pc and the VRAM is only 4MB. I get a pop-up window telling me I need to install the VPC Additions (which help with better video) but I cannot. I click the "Install Additions" button which does nothing. I click the puzzle piece icon in the bottom menu bar for VPC to install additions but it does nothing either. I just can't seem to get it to work.

Also, I have the exact same problem mentioned in this thread:

http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?threadid=16897&highlight=virtual+pc

I only have version 5.0 and cannot find the 5.0.2 or 5.0.4 updater anywhere (@#!!@$#&& Microsoft). Does anybody know if the updater will fix my problem? And if so, does anybody know where I can get the updater?

Thanks in advanced for any help.

Unfortunately VPC Additions is a Windows only extension. It won't work with Linux. You should be able to change the VRAM in the Settings for that virtual PC, which would allow you to increase the screen resolution.

Hmmmm ... interesting. Thanks for the info.

Now, any idea how to change the VRAM for the VPC? I checked in the "Settings" for my Linux VPC and there was no VRAM setting there. :(

Ah, I apologise. The VRAM setting is in VPC 6, not 5. VPC emulates a S3 Trio 32/64 PCI video card. Have you tried installing the driver for this in Linux?

I've had the same problem with Red Hat Linux since VPC 3.0 days. FreeBSD has no trouble picking up the display options and letting me set it to 1024 x 768 but Red Hat fixates on 800 x 600 and I can't budge it from there.

I posted both an archived discussion from defunct Connectix forum about getting success with Linux in VPC AND the 5.0.4 updater here for you:

Thanks everybody for all your help.

Bruce ... I've downloaded the updater from your site, thank you.

Unfortunately, when I try to install the updater I get the following error:

Sorry, you must have Virtual PC 5.0, 5.01, 5.02, or 5.03 installed to use this update. This application will now quit.

[ OK ]

Which is strange because I have VPC version 5.0 installed. I don't know ... maybe if I try to re-install the RedHat disk.
