I want to network my house so I can play my Itunes music on my stereo system.

I have looked at slimp3 and eyehome but they wont play DRM ACC's.

The idea I have is to buy the cheapest Mac I can off EBAY that will run OS X and has a decent sound card and ethernet connectivity.

I think the price would be comparable to a slimp3 or eyehome ($299) but would give me much more capability.

Being a switcher I don't know what older systems would be able to do this or there price.

Comments?

I have an older All-In-One G3 that I have hooked into my stereo. In case you didn't know, the AIO G3 was the last AIO that apple made prior to the iMac. It has a G3 233, runs OS X.2 and I mostly use the iTunes Library sharing to play all my music. Not the most technically advanced, but the whole Rendezvous thing means that I never have to configure or reconnect things when computers restart, wires get pulled, etc. The AIO is a bit bulky compared to a stereo component, but I got it for $50 at the university surplus sale. Not much use to them anymore, I guess. Just my .02

Almost any old iMac will do the trick, only you need to be sure it has at least 128 RAM, preferably 256. Depending on how much music you plan to serve, the hard drive size is a factor as well; the early iMacs came with only about a 4 G hard drive, but that might be enough for you.
