Can I use USB 1.1 with a new 40 GB iPod? I have an older iMac (350 slot loading). I know it will be slow.

In the iPod manual it says that USB 1.1 can be used with a Windows PC. I can't find anything about using it with a Mac.

AFAIK USB 2 and 1.x are intercompatible. the whole bus will only be as fast as the slowest device connected--but, they should all work together fine.

The Apple website says the following:
___
iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable (Windows PC only)

The iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable offers Windows PC customers up to 480Mbps data transfer for quickly loading an entire music library on iPod. Connect the FireWire cable up to the iPod power adapter to charge while syncing. Compatible with iPods with dock connector only.
___
It sayss Windows only. Can any one confirm its use with Mac?

Thanks cudaboy_71

Even on a PC, using the iPod requires USB 2, because it gives speeds comparable to FireWire. You wouldn't be happy using USB 1.1 to transfer large amounts of songs, even if it would work on a Mac. You may want to look for a Mac that has FireWire. Unfortunately, you have a low end iMac, which was sold at that time without FireWire.

I know this is an old post, but just to clear things up for researchers: I know at least the latest iPods (click wheel) do not work with USB1.1. I have a slot loading 333Mhz iMac which will not work with the new iPod. It shows up on the desktop, but not in iTunes. Additionally, the music folder is not visible from the finder, so you can't just move the songs over in the finder (unless it's a simple matter of an invisible folder, i haven't checked). So I'd say don't count on an iPod working on an older machine without firewire or usb2.

Tech Specs for new iPods:

Mac requirements:
Macintosh computer with FireWire port; Mac OS X v10.1.5 or later (Mac OS X 10.3 or later recommended); USB 2.0 requires Mac OS X v10.3.4

To me this means that it requires a Mac with a firewire port. If the computer doesn't at least have that, then the iPod won't function properly.

Quicksketch - I just wanted to say thankyou! I have searched/posted everywhere to find out whether my 4th gen iPod should work using my usb1.1 port (running Mac OS 10.2.6) - it charges and appears on the desktop but isn't recognized by iTunes, iPod updater etc. I know Apple says it won't but I suspected they were just advising against it for speed issues. (I think my firewire ports are bust as it doesn't even show up on the system profiler, even though it charges thru there too).

You have reassured me that if I upgrade to Panther OS and/or install a firewire/usb2.0 combi pci card I may actually get to use my iPod!!

OK, for anyone suffering the same problems I had (iPod not mounting, basically; no USB2.0 facility, and firewire ports not working) you do need to have OS 10.3 (Panther) to use USB 1.1, as well as USB2.0. With 10.2.6 I couldn't get the thing to be recognized, but having upgraded the OS it works fine.

Just to be clear, an older slot loading non-firewire iMac works with the newer iPod as long as the mac is running 10.3? Slow is OK, as long as it works.

Thanks for clarifying. It would be really cool if this works.

1. USB 1.1 is 40 times slower than USB 2.0
2. iPods can only use either FireWire or USB 2.0 on both Macs and PCs. A Mac requires at least OS X 10.3.4 to use USB 2.0 with an iPod. Due to the slow connection speed, USB 1.1 and an iPod would be completely useless.
2. If you're asking about use with a Windows XP system, you can add a USB 2.0 card for probably $15... :)

Yes...

Interesting. My sons Nano works perfectly fine on 10.2.8 / USB 1.1 when according to that chart it won't.
I guess that seeing as we never told it it wouldn't work the Nano has just assumed it would and blindly gone ahead. :-)

I'm sure there are exceptions, but Apple would say they are untested, and won't support unlisted combinations.
If you are OK with the slow transfer speeds, then that's great. You'll find less success if you try to plug into a keyboard USB port.
