I have upgraded 3 iphones 4 two Ipad2s to IOS5. and we have one iphone4S all work fine with icloud imessage, etc. *** On two Ipad2s its been fine with ios5 and icloud, but NOT imessage. It just will not activate. You get a message: Imessage Activation Check your Network Connection. Which is of course fine, one can browse internet, etc on thest Ipads, send email, etc.
On Line folk have suggested, using a gmail account instead of me.com, but of course you really end up creating a me.com login regardless, just with a gmail address as the user id, trying a new me.com account, resetting apple ids, etc., changing dns wifi settings to google 8.8.8.8 or that and 8.8.8.8.8.8.4.4, etc. has also been suggested
None Of that has worked. Neither has rebooting. I do not believe this issue is unique to the Ipad and I have seen similar complaints about face time. I think the issue on Ipads though is without an active cell connection Imessage can not be used at all without an activation where on a phone of your course works fine without, and then you may or may not have issues adding an email address to Imessage on a phone. While doing so on the phones gave me some grief, it was nothing like on the Ipad2s where it has not worked at all.
For those that do not know you also need to make sure address book entries for people you communicate with have both an email address and a Cell phone number for the Free over wifi and cell data for text message to work vs. regular SMS cell based messaging.
