Can anyone tell me a good FAQ or pdf on how to install sane in osx? ( the official README and FAQs where useless)
I've been trying to for a week with no success at all. Something that doesn't require much unix knowledge
Thanks

I assume the manufacturer of your scanner doesn't support OS X.

Have you considered VueScan?
http://www.apple.com/macosx/gems/vuescan.html

The SANE page
http://panda.mostang.com/sane/
says that it supports OS X (10.2.6)

I have no experience with SANE myself but I see that you do need to compile it yourself. Such things always require at least minimal UNIX knowledge and often good understanding of the compilation process and how to debug it.

Actually I use Agfa Fotolook, which works great. The problem is that I wanted to share this scanner to my LAN so I wouldn't have to stop working everytime someone need to scan something. I imagined that as X11 supports simultaneous user logins I could create a user just for this purpose and people would log in and scan at their will. I didn't find any solution better then this. Maybe I'll have to wait for Panther which I think will support simultaneous logins.

Maybe I'll have to wait for Panther which I think will support simultaneous logins. The issue is not with simultaneous user sessions which are supported already in OS X. The issue is with simultaneous access to the graphical facilities of your machine. Currently, you can have as many users simulateously logged in as you want, but only one user can be using Aqua apps. the others can only use text-based apps or X11 apps that are running on your machine but which are displayed on the other user's screen.

Panther will still not allow remote access to Aqua apps in the way that you can run an X11 app on your machine but display it elsewhere. Panther merely allows serialized access to the screen - so that you don't need to log out in order to let some one else log in and use your screen. I.e. it provides a way to suspend your login session rather than logging out.

X11 is still the only way that someone can run an app on your machine while displaying it and controlling it from another machine - so that they don't affect your use of the machine.

Really? Panther won't let you do that? only 10.4 who knows??!!Is that so hard to code?

well the question remains if anyone knows how to share a scanner in a better way than this, or has already compiled SANE please let me know.

RE: At the Risk of A low Tech Soulition....

And so you also do not have to have someone hover over near you to place Objects on the Scan Bed...

Why not let the Scanner Go with the Person Who needs... Sneaker Net

Also a Canon Lido Scan 20s are selling $49 Get A second Scanner

On a side note One of the other Posters mentioned X11 being a workable solution...

If you use Fink, SANE Version 1.0.12-2 is available in the current-unstable tree.

http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/search.php?s=SANE

See http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/usage-fink.php#unstable for instructions on using the unstable tree, otherwise you won't be able to install this. And, you might have to look at http://fink.sourceforge.net/doc/cvsaccess/index.php in case you need to pull something from CVS.

I have not used SANE, but I have pulled a few things from the unstable tree, like gnucash to replace Quicken, and have been satisfied.

Thanks, but I tried Fink too. It won't install, there seems to be something missing in the server ( some library I think)

It's a professional Scanner, lots of people use it, and besides things in Brazil aren't that easy (49 for a scanner)

OK:) Sorry usually Pro Scanners have a server Option .......

Maybe third part Software like Vue or Silver etc.

Another 2 Thoughts : Assuming USB Scanner..

1) USB KVM Switches allow two computers to Share
devices

2) Does not the Apples Airport Base stations offer an Option to Serve up USB Devices Plugged into it.

Good Luck.

For What its worth Scanners Have come down a lot in price.... Since the SCCI days

The fact that your using a SCCI Scanner tells me its Age loosely as all new ones for the last 4 years or so are USB1, 2 and Firewire.

Scanners that used to cost $1000 dollars are $50 to $130 e.g. CanoScan Lido 20, and many others.

And Higher End Ones that can Actually handle Transparcies with an appropriate Optical Density Start Around $250... Epson makes a nice one I think its the Expression 1600.

There are of course Exostic Scanners that cost more, but you should look around a bit too.
