View Full Version : Missing application icons in Applications folder

I installed CrossOver so that I could try out a windows program. Now when I open the Applications folder in the Users (me) folder, the only application showing is the CrossOver folder and within that the windows application I want to try.

The app icons show up in the computer/applications folder tho.

I ran Coctail and Applejack which did not correct the problem. I'm thinking it's some sort of permissions problem, but not sure.

???

Thanks:confused:

The Applications folder IN THE USER ACCOUNT normally doesn't exist until something creates it.
Normally, all your Applications are the /Applications folder, at the top level of your hard drive.

If CrossOver has installed itself in an Applications folder in your user account, then that os so it can only be used by that user. Applications are normally installed in the usual Applications folder so that all users can access them.

I don't know why CrossOver has installed itself there, but it is not in itself anything to worry about. You just need to be aware that there are two Applications folders. It is unusual, and perhaps a bit insecure.

This is the same division as with the Font locations, or Preferences, or several other things. There are folders at the top level of the disk, available to all, and then there are folders within the user account that are only relevant to that user.

Now when I open the Applications folder in the Users (me) folder, the only application showing is the CrossOver folder and within that the windows application I want to try.

Note that most applications are installed into the Applications folder at the root of your drive, not one inside your home folder. Are you perhaps just confusing the two? What's inside the Applications folder at your drive's root?

If you have previously created a second Applications folder that is placed within your home folder (which is perfectly acceptable, it's just not default), and stuff that you installed into there is not visible now, this sounds like it could be a major bug in the CrossOver installer.

Let's see what is really going on under the hood. Please copy/paste the following commands into your Terminal (which is found in /Applications/Utilities), then copy/paste the entire Terminal session back to this thread for us to see. This will give us a view into what is actually present in your /Applications folder as well as in your /Users/yourusername/Applications folder.

ls -alOe /Applications
ls -alOe $HOME/Applications
id
echo "done"

I'm pretty sure that understand that. The application folder that shows up for me at the user level is sort of like and alias of the application folder at the root level. :D I have not created any "other" application folders. This is what I got after set up. I know I can create an alias of the application folder and place in my user folder. But I'd just like to get back what I had before I installed the CrossOver software. Which I have now deleted.

1) The results of the commands you ran in Terminal show that your /Applications folder (the one at the top of the drive) is in good shape with all the usual applications.
So if you open a Finder window on the drive, you should see it and all apps.

2) Perhaps your problem is with the Sidebar in the Finder. Normally a sort of alias of the top-level /Application folder is shown there for easy access. Does this not show up?
A screen capture showing your Finder window would make things clearer.

Bodie1550:
I don't see the problem in looking at your screenshots.
Your top-level /Applications folder appears in the Sidebar and show all the usual apps.
The "Applications" folder under your home folder appears in the screenshot of your home folder. This (as explained above) is a different folder than the top-level Applications folder.

Maybe you could explain what it is that you expected different than what is shown.

The second screen shot. wmarler is selected in the side bar. The Applications folder is at top left. When I double click on that folder -- it is empty. No apps. Nada.

When I click on Applications in the side bar I can see all my apps. I haven't lost any apps which is great. But why can't I see my apps as mentioned in the first paragraph above? Regardless how minor the problem is, something is broken.

There are two Applications folders. One, at the top level (and thus named /Applications) contains applications available to everyone on your computer. "wmarler" is your home folder, which is usually abbreviated ~ or ~wmarler. Inside that is the other Applications folder (and thus named ~/Applications), which is used only for applications that are just for your personal use.

You have access to all applications in both folders. The fact that ~/Applications is empty is normal. While a user can install personal applications, and there's nothing wrong with that, the usual strategy is to put all applications in /Applications (or subfolders of that) so that one copy is shared by everyone using the computer.

If you're the only user of your computer, the distinction may seem pointless, but OS X is designed to handle with aplomb the common circumstance where a computer has several users, each with their own account. In fact, even if you're the only user (besides Apple, of course), it's good practice to have at least two user accounts, one with admin privileges and one without. Use the admin account only when you're wearing your admin hat, and the standard account for day-to-day use.

That is the "Applications" folder under your home folder. It is normally empty.
All your applications are in the other "Applications" folder at the top-level of the drive.

If having two "Applications" folders confuses you, you could rename the one under your home folder - e.g. rename it to "Applications.wmarler".

And if you're in the Finder and would like quick access to the top-level Applications folder which actually has applications, you can use the Go menu to select Applications (or simply press Command-Shift-A). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon for your hard drive, then drag the Applications folder into your Dock, in the area just to the left of the Trash.

Thanks everyone for your time and trouble. I will just live with what I got.

When I got the MBP new and set it up, the user/applications folder displayed all the same apps as the HD/applications folder. And whenever i added an app it showed up in both locations. I am the only user - the administrator. I think I understand the whole network idea with the administrator having total access and other users having limited access. Since I am the only user I just hoped that there was some simple way to restore my system to the way it was a few days ago before installing CrossOver.

My Mac Pro desktop is the same way. I am the only user and the user/applications folder and the HD/applications folder show all the apps when I open them.

Thanks again.

Sounds like in the user folder of your Mac Pro there is an alias to the Applications folder (if you're familiar with Windows, an Alias is just like a Shortcut). You can check by going to the user folder on the Mac Pro, selecting the Applications there, then using the File menu to select Get Info. It will probably say the Kind is an Alias (if not, feel free to tell us what the Kind is). If it is an alias and you'd like to duplicate this setup on your MacBook Pro, it's very easy to do.

On the MBP, double click on your hard drive icon (or, in the Finder, use the Go menu to select Computer).
Click once on the Applications folder, then use the File menu to select Make Alias.
Move the just-created alias to your user folder.

This is definitely not the usual way. I.e. this is not the default setup - you must have done something special to get it to be that way.

Well, that makes me feel better. Guess I started out abnormal and now I'm normal. Normal is good. :D

Thanks. I've never been a windows guy. Mac only for 24 years. So I'm quite familiar with aliases.
