View Full Version : Kernel Panics out of the blue -- Should I try TechTool Pro or something else?

Quick info: This is for my MacBook Pro. All RAM, etc is stock straight from Apple from the day I ordered it.

I have had two kernel panics in the last 8 days which is not normal. I've owned this computer for 2-3 years and have never had a kernel panic before (that I can remember) so having two in just a little over a week indicates to me that something is wrong.

I'd like to run some diagnostic tests to see if I can figure out if anything's failing.

The only maintenance software I run is Cocktail. I remember using TechTool years ago (could be as much as a decade ago by now) so I will probably need to buy it fresh again.

Would you guys suggest I get TechTool Pro or is that no longer recommended? Is there something else I should get instead? Thanks! :)

Start by doing 3 things:
1) Post the panic.log so maybe we can get a clue from it as to the cause. You should be able to get this log file via the "Console" app.

2) Do "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility when booted from the Install DVD.
See this Apple doc: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

3) Check the RAM with 'memtest':
http://www.memtestosx.org/
Be sure to do the long test - several hours or overnight.

1. panic.log coming in my next post.

2. Will do. I think I'll try "verify disk" first just to get an idea of what it reports. I hate doing repairs completely blind.

3. Fantastic. That's the kind of thing I was looking for.

I'll let you know what I find out! Thanks! :)

Kernel panics are invariably hardware based...do you have anything external plugged in
?

I don't think that soho meant to say that kernel panics are invariably hardware based.
That leads to the inaccurate conclusion that any kernel panic is caused by faulty hardware, which isn't always true.
in this case, probably outdated, or incorrect drivers.

To help eliminate hardware problems, disconnect any external devices, and run your Hardware test - boot to your OS X restore DVD while holding the letter D. You should boot to the hardware test. Run both the standard and the extended tests.

What are you using that uses USB connections, including any external USB hubs?

DeltaMac...well I sort of did mean it as I've had many KP caused by external devices...anyway I was just making sure he disconnects any external devices as a test.

Thanks, guys, I understand what you're both saying. In this case, I'm not running any external devices. I'm plugged into the power and that's it. Everything else is either internal to my MBP or is wireless (airport).

I won't be able to run the tests just yet, but I'll let you know what I find when I do run them. It'll probably be a day or two.

From the kernel modules mentioned in the panic.log in the "Kernel Extensions in backtrace" section, it looks like there might be a problem with your graphics card. Or it might just be bad (corrupted?) drivers.

I second that hayne's…
do a archive and install from your installer DVD, and save user data check box.

A graphics related issue would fit. This last panic, I was watching a podcast on iTunes (the new Apple WWDC in fact) and had just started up Chrome. IIRC, the other panic occurred under similar circumstances.

Is there any way of testing for a bad/corrupted driver or testing the graphics card? I'd prefer to actually find the problem so I'll know I've fixed it. Otherwise, I'd have to wait for weeks to see if I don't get a panic to decide it's fixed.

I think the Apple Hardware Test mentioned by DeltaMac above is your best bet.

Great, I'll do that. Thanks! :)
