As something of the archivist for this forum ;), I recommend PTH Clock (http://www.pth.com/PTHClock/) as a replacement for the Date and Time clock in the top menu bar. It also sports a simple calendar (picture on its web page). It's free!
This company has some other tweaks that are pretty cool.

While we're on the subject, there are a number of alarm clocks for OS X. If you get caught up in projects (as I do) and forget to take breaks, an alarm clock can be a real help.
I've been using RSIDock (http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=10827&db=mac) (a dockling) since the early days of OS X. You can set the time, it gives you a visual reminder when your time is almost up, and it will literally cover your display during the break time you've set (this cover page can be disabled with Cmd-Esc).
