View Full Version : why won't this video play for me?
http://vimeo.com/12310384
^^ this is the link..at the top of the page. It's a tutorial on how to model rocks in Blender 3D.
when the page loads, I see the placeholder for the video. Since I use click2flash, I have to select "Load Flash" from it's menu...most of the time, such videos play, but this one just goes blank.
Anyone else?
Matters not whether I try Safari or Firefox (with FF flash enabled).
Thanks for any clues.

Works for me in Safari 5.0.2 with ClickToFlash installed. Maybe it would help if you add vimeo.com to the whitelist (via Safari menu > ClickToFlash > Preferences > Automatic Loading).

thank you...I will try that...
on this computer with Tiger, I won't be able to move to Safari 5.x...so..hope this works.
a
that did not fix things.
:(
Okay, two more almost-shots-in-the-dark suggestions: 1) Did you try quitting and re-launching Safari after that change (not that it should really matter). 2) Perhaps you're running an old version of Adobe Flash?

I did try quitting and re-launching Safari.
Just checked my flash player and it say "9"
I had been using 10, but recently installed onto a new hard drive from an image that didn't have 10 on it...maybe that's the fix?
a
A new version of Flash was just released today (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4783/adobe-flash-player).
just installed it and rebooted...
unfortunately the movie at that link STILL won't play for me!
this time, I don't even see the Flash placeholder you see when click2flash is installed.
a
Is the same true in Firefox? Also, I should have mentioned this before, my experience is with the ClickToFlash beta (v. 1.6b9). Are you using that or the latest stable version (v. 1.5.5)?
same in firefox: it won't play.
I am using c2f 1.5.3...not 1.5.5.
think that could be it?
Sure, I think that could be the problem, but I admit that's really just a guess.
ok...I have had trouble with later versions of c2f...
but why would firefox not play it? I have flash enabled in FF
but why would firefox not play it? I have flash enabled in FF
I'm at a loss to explain why the problem is also affecting Firefox in your setup.
Whether Firefox or Safari, are you able to view other videos on Vimeo? Beyond Vimeo?

No, I can not play vimeo clips in either browser. No more on You Tube, either, which is new..
I'd say my flash movie playing ability is totally hosed right now. I have no clue.
I know for a fact that this computer with this OS (10.4.11) has successfully played flash videos previously.
seems almost like something in there is goobering things up...what could that "something" be?
I've heard lots of stories of issues with adobe's installers..is that possibly a culprit?
just noticed that installer was for 64-bit...I don't know if this rig IS 64 bit or not...is there a way to tell?

Works for me on a 1.25GHz G4 iMac, with Tiger, Safari 4.1.1 and Adobe 10.0.42.34. No C2F on this system. The audio drops out for a moment (.1 second?) every second or so, but disabling video HD improves matters enough to make the tutorial watchable.

OK..so, clearly, it's not an issue of horsepower or OS...
there must be something on my system causing trouble.

What plugins do you have installed in your Library/Web Plugins?
What plugins do you have installed in your Library/Web Plugins?
It's easier to simply check by using the Help menu in Safari to select Installed Plug-ins.

garsh...I don't see that folder..

ah..that is easy.
however, there are a boat load of things listed...which ones am I lookin for?
I see C2F 1.5.3 in there toward the bottom....

You can start with the main headings listed in bold, like QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.4. Or, you could do a Print to PDF of the list and attach it here.

ok...the beastie is here:
acme's safari installed plugins (http://thinkplan.org/acme's Installed Plug-ins.pdf)
You're showing Flash as 10.0. When I fired up my 10.4 machine a little while ago and tried the video, I got a message saying I needed Flash version 10.1. In my case — and I'm not certain this applies for you — downloading and installing the latest Flash didn't work (the version 10.2 I linked way up thread).
I ended up having to download 10.1 which was offered to me on the Vimeo page via a Flash dialog box. Before installing it, though, I used EasyFind (http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html) to find any Flash-related files and delete them. Then I installed Flash v. 10.1. I rebooted, and the Vimeo video played as well as possible considering my 10.4 machine is a 500 MHz G3 PowerBook (Pismo) running Safari 3.1.2 with maybe 340 MB of RAM.
Point being, you may want to try what I did, though I can understand if you're a little wary of pursuing all that.

no..it sounds worthy..but I did install something adobe said was the latest version for my machine.
I've about had it with horsing around with adobe stuff...not on this subject...in life.
thanks..I'll try your suggestions.

I, too, installed the latest version. Then I restarted. And I still got the same "You need Flash version 10.1" message. For whatever reason, it's a if the new version didn't properly replace the old version. And since there was no uninstaller that I could find, I deleted things manually before installing Flash. For some reason, that worked.

this is all sounding very familiar...I had a hunch that might have been it: the new install not replacing the old.
won't kill me to do it by hand..

Not a long-term solution to your problem, but you could try the following:
View the page source
Search for >>param name="movie"<< (without angle brackets)
You should see something like:
<param name="movie" value="/moogaloop_local.swf?clip_id=12310384&server=vimeo.com&autoplay=0&fullscreen=1&show_portrait=0&show_title=0&show_byline=0&color=00ADEF&context=user:1480770&context_id=&hd_off=0&buildnum=eae9f" />
Copy the path given in the "value" element
Enter "http://vimeo.com" into the address bar followed by the copied string
You may have to click on the screen since you have click2flash, but it should now play*
*at least it did for me using Opera on Linux (I had the exact same trouble with the video not playing on the actual page)
Of course, if there is a problem with your flash player, this may not work either.

In Safari preferences, <security>, make sure the "Web content" <enable plug-ins> is checked.
thank you...I had checked them previously and plug-ins were and are enabled, along with javascript and the other goodies in there..
