As a mac newby I have been trying to enable my printer to work in OS9. I have an HP Deskjet 5500 printer which has been installed to run with OSX, however when trying to print in Quark which runs in classic I get the message "cannot find printer. 64)

If someone could tell me how I can set it up to print in classic it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Kim.

When in Classic (maybe while Quark is running) go to the Apple menu, choose the Chooser. Click on the icon for your Printer (probably HP DeskJet?) then click on the printer port in the right pane in the chooser. This should be the connection that the printer uses, USB, ethernet, whatever. If no port shows up after selecting the driver; or no HP driver at all in the LEFT pane, then the OS9 driver needs to still be installed. Sometimes this is best done when BOOTED from OS 9, not just running Classic.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that and let you know how I get on.

Thanks Again,

Keep in mind that you may need to install classic / OS 9 drivers in order for your HP printer to show up in the Chooser.

Having started up in OS9 I have succesfully intstalled the printer and it now prints in classic mode hooray!!!

However after restarting again in OSX now when I try to open Quark 5 it comes up with "This version of QuarkXPress cannot be run with this system language. [4]"

It was fine before what have I done now?

Thanks, Kim

I have also just discovered that now I cant print in OSX. I've got a msg saying it won't print due to an internal error.

Is it a case of whatever I set up or install while in OS9 it will have an effect on OSX. I have not partitioned my hard drive so they run independently would this be a solution.

Please help before I throw my beloved G4 out of the window!!!!

Thanks again,
Kim

Straight from the QE Tech support logs. Solutions: For Mac OS
The language version of your copy of QuarkXPress must be compatible with the language version of your operating system. If you installed the Mac OS 8.x Setup Assistant, launch it, and follow the directions on-screen to make sure the regional preferences for your operating system are set to a language that matches your version of QuarkXPress.

If the language versions of your copy of QuarkXPress and your operating system match and you still get this alert, check to make sure you have the correct Mac OS keyboard layout selected (Apple Menu ? Control Panels ? Keyboard).

For your printer problem in OSX, try removing your printer from Print Center, then add a printer again. If that does not help, then download Print Center Repair (from Versiontracker) Run all options one at a time, including removing other manufacturers drivers. Last step would be to repair your permissions (from Disk Utility) then make sure you can print from any other program than QE (Text Edit would be a good choice fro sample printing)

Printer works now thanks.

As for Quark, it worked fine before installing the printer in os 9, although as I'd not done a start up in os9 before I had to go through the setup. Any idea's whats its changed. Or does this shed any light?

Thanks Again,

Kim.

The difference is: you installed the printer for classic. :) this apparently changed some minor settings in regard to QE. the notes that I sent you were related to fixing the problem you have now
