iPod Shuffle, not recognized

why can't i see my iPod in itunes, and or on the dock?

Have you not used the shuffle for quite some time? Did it go completely flat? If that happens, sometimes it needs to be plugged in for a long time before it has enough power to be identified. Otherwise you should try Apple's reset, restore, retry, reinstall steps to see if you can get it working again: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/.
