View Full Version : Problems compressing folders copied to fat32 USB Stick

I had a problem today compressing a folder and eventually figured out that if I copy a folder onto my Fat32 usb stick and then copy back onto the mac, it won't compress (Compress just hangs)
Is there an obvious answer to why this happens? (this is in Snow Leopard)

The term 'compress' can mean many things. Can you use a lot more words and a lot more detail to describe what you are doing when you compress things?

Compress doesn't work on directories. It only works on files.
tar -zcvf myarchive.tgz somedir

What I mean by compress is right clicking on the folder and selecting "Compress <foldername>" from the menu. That creates a Zip of the folder.

I suspect that the problem may be related to the extra "._" files that the Finder creates when you copy something with resource forks to a non-HFS filesystem.
When you copy it back, those files are supposed to get re-absorbed (to create the resource forks) and hence disappear, but maybe that didn't happen and their presence is ticking a bug in the framework that handles the "Compress" operation in Finder.
