isync without .mac?

Has anyone been able to use isync to sync with ical between two computers over the internet and NOT pay the extorsion of a .mac membership?

This article by Otto Moerbeck (http://www.drijf.net/dototto/index.html) explains how to emulate .mac for backup, I am unsure if it works for iSync too.
