SSL support in Mail 10.1.3?

I just recently updated my OS to 10.1.3 - included in this update is SSL (secure socket layer???) support for the native Mail.app. My question is, what exactly does this "feature" allow me to do, and secondly, what can I do to take advantage of it? Thanks a lot ya'll.

Look in Mail Preferences under Accounts section. You will have to select one
of the accounts that you have set up and click "Edit" to just see the
current settings. Then select "Account Options" tab. There is a button
there marked "SSL".

Checking this button presumably allows the Mail app to attempt
to send (and probably also read) messages over an SSL session.
I have not used this feature yet, so the details on what it does
exactly is speculation.
