View Full Version : Remap option-F12 in Snow Leopard?

In Dreamweaver CS4, option-F12 executes the "preview in browser' command. Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, option-F12 opens System Preferences, which is quite annoying.
I have looked through all of the commands in all of the categories in Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts, and I can't find command-F12 anywhere.
How do I remap the behavior of that keystroke set?

Hmm… Niether Option-F12 nor Command-F12 opens System Preferences for me. It must be some 3rd party utility previously installed that gained priority when Snow Leopard was installed.

Any idea how I could figure out what utility is hijacking the keystrokes?

No, he doesn't have any third party utilities installed. That's standard Mac OS behavior. You probably have an older keybaord. F12 is the volume up key. Holding option and that key is a standard Leopard shortcut to the Sound prefane. Option with the other keys (brightness, expose, dashboard, and keyboard brightness also open their prefpanes).
mrbelm: In the Keyboard prefpane, check "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" and see if that works for you.

Ah! Option-F5 on the MacBook Pro… Nice...
In answer to mrblem then, Press fn-Option-F12 to "Preview in Browser".

Righto. Good answer...
P.S. Las Vegas: I think it's time for you to upgrade to a new machine! You know you want that 7 hour battery.

(alt)-F12 does nothing for me either, using a standard transparent biscuit-catcher Apple keyboard.
Or is this only on laptops?

On your keyboard, Option-Volume (Mute, Down or Up) will do it.

@chabig: Will you please convince my wife?

I have the keyboard that shipped with my Mac Pro (which my wife told me to buy), the slim aluminum one. So yes, F12 is volume up as standard behavior. I don't want to shut off the preprogrammed behavior for those keys since they're quite handy.
I discovered you can re-map key commands in Dreamweaver (Dreamweaver menu > Keyboard Shortcuts), so I re-mapped the browser preview to the otherwise unused F13.
Thanks for the suggestions!

I'll try. Do you live in Vegas? I'll be there in November.
