I have a late ,08 macbook pro os x and I'm running snow leopard 6.1. I

purchased an external box (3.5) and installed a 1.5tb hard disk in it. I

connected the mbp to the external drive via eSata port using an express card

on mbp side Sata connection to the Esata port of the external box. The

problem is, when I went into disk utilities to initialize the new drive, I was

not able to see the drive. There is no drive at all. I tried a different

cable and same thing happened. What am I doing wrong? can anyone help.

All components are new. I'm thinking the Esata port is defective. I have

tried

this procedure on a pc laptop with same express card running Vista and ran

into same problem. I should add that both laptops recognize the express

card.

I need help solving this problem.

Thanks in advance for all the information you can give me.

Since you installed a bare drive into the enclosure, it is possible that the drive has never been partitioned for any OS. Does the drive appear when connected via USB? If the enclosure doesn't support USB, I suggest investing in an inexpensive universal ATA/SATA to USB adapter ($9-15). This device is extremely handy for connecting just about any bare drive to your computer.

The box has a USB port and it works fine from there but I want to use the Esata port for speed.

Please tell us in the greatest possible detail exactly WHICH eSATA ExpressCard you have installed, and exactly what point version of the drivers for that card you have installed. Are those drivers listed by the card manufacturer as being supported on Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.1?
