View Full Version : ipod update leaves me unmountable

Was eager to apply the new iPod update, seemed reasonable when at the end of the update it instructed me to unplug and replug my iPod to finish updating. Now it won't mount at all. My iPod just shows a picture of a plug--I plug it in the firewire but the screen goes blank again as if it were turned off and no iPod appears on my mac.

I have a Lombard with a Orangelink card--it really works great. Until now.

I have a faint memory of this happening when I first got my iPod, made mistakes, restored the factory settings. I've tried restarting with the iPod connected, which is what I did that time, but no go. System Profiler finds no Firewire devices--just the card. Any ideas?

How do I reboot the iPod? I tried pressing menu and play, but it just shows the apple, the plug, and blanks out again.

I let it recharge for awhile and then, somehow, it resumed its old life. Sort of puzzling, but at least it's working!

After you update the ipod it wants to reflash the firmware on the unit. this works best if you plug in to AC power not the firewire port on the computer. this affects windows users more than mac users as some of their firewire cards do not supply power via the firewire cable. when it says to unplug and replug the unit after an update or restore i always plug it in to AC power for best results.

Aha--that makes total sense. My firewire port is a card, and thus is unpowered. I simply didn't know what the plug icon meant. Now I understand it simply wanted power to do its moves. Thanks.

Plug the iPod into some power source, whether that is USB or a charger. If you don't have any power source, your iPod is going to run out of battery soon, so you need to get one.
