Just noticed a buzz that lasted about 10 seconds when I woke my machine from sleep...

the only sound I hear most of the time is a very quiet whirring.. is that buzz sound a normal part of the machine spinning up its electrical system and components?

thanks,

Brand new Mac Pro, right?
Open the side door, and try to locate the sound. Could be a brief reset of the fans, or the optical drives, etc.
Watch and listen for a few days.
If the sound is part of waking up, then it may be normal, get used to it as a sound you can expect.
If you remain concerned, then you can call AppleCare, and see what they have to say about it.

I am pretty sure it's vibration as the fans and drive rev up...it doesn't happen all the time and if I place my hand gently on the side of the case, it dampens it out..I put some cork underneath the feet to dampen (or so I thought!) any vibration which might resonate on the wooden shelf where it sits...

thanks!

Did you open the side door to check it out?
Do you have a disk in your optical drive tray?

you mean, open the side door while the machine is powered up? or to sleep it, open the door and THEN wake it up?

no disk in the optical drive...

If you hear that noise when you wake your Mac, then have the door open when you next wake your new MacPro. You don't have to open the door at any special time, but the suggestion that I am offering would be much easier if you can look around inside while that sound is happening, eh?
Also, as the hard drive mounts are known to vibrate at certain times, it's very simple to slide your hard drive out, and move to another slot. (OH - don't do that move with the hard drive that you are booted from - :D Shut down first.... )

Again, if you aren't comfortable with any of this, and your don't want to look around for yourself - then call AppleCare to hear what they have to say...
Your short noise may be completely normal, - or not...

OK...thank you.

I'll keep an ear/eye on it.

One of my hard drives buzzes. It buzzes the loudest when starting up. After a while it quiets down. I know this because the noise did not exist before I bought the new hard drive and put it in the Mac Pro.
